Industry mourns loss of pinball icon Steve Kordek

Pinball icon Steve Kordek, who recently turned 100, passed away on Feb. 19 in Park Ridge, Ill. He was honored by his peers at a luncheon and celebration of his life and career on Jan. 20. Kordek's career spanned 63 years, although in retirement he still mentored young designers, and he always attended the Pinball Expo.

Kordek is survived by four children: Fr. Frank Kordek OFM, Kathy Kordek Petrash, Richard Kordek, and Donna Kordek Logazino; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and siblings Joseph and Stanley Kordek and Florence Wozny.

Visitation is Feb. 22, 3-9 p.m. at the Colonial-Wojclechowski Funeral Home at 6250 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago. A mass will be celebrated at St. Juliana Church in Chicago Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. with interment to follow at St. Adalbert Cemetery.

Malcolm Steinberg, Chairman of the LAI Group, shared his remembrances of Steve Kordek: "I first met Steve in 1970 at the Williams headquarters in Chicago. I was there for a meeting with Sam Stern (Gary Stern's father) to try and get distribution rights for Williams' games in Australia. Steve was the designer of a single player pinball game called Doodlebug, which turned out to be the first Williams pinball that we distributed in Australia. At that time, Steve had been designing pinballs for more than 30 years. In the 1970s and 1980s, Williams was competing with Bally, Gottlieb, and Chicago Coin for what then was a much larger international pinball market than it is today."

Steinberg continued, "Even after his retirement Steve remained active in the industry and was responsible for forming the Century Club for old-timers in the industry like me. We met at least once a year at industry trade shows in the U.S. Steve was responsible for many innovations in the pinball industry. These included twin flippers at the bottom of the playfield, drop targets in 1962, and multi-ball in 1963. Steve will be remembered as one of the great icons of our industry, and may he rest in peace knowing the great contribution he has made."

An article in The Washington Post today said Kordek "was credited with developing more than 100 pinball games, including the bestsellers Space Mission and Grand Prix. Yet his most enduring contribution was the dual flippers."

Special Report: Education game on at AMOA State Council Meeting

The theme "Getting and Staying in the Game" set the tone for this year's Amusement and Music Operators Association (AMOA) Council of Affiliated States Meeting. Sixty-nine attendees from 28 states gathered in Phoenix Feb. 9-11 at the Renaissance Phoenix Downtown.

The agenda was packed with state reports; two manufacturer panels; a legislative update from Michael Zolandz of SNR Denton; a report from Katie Wilkinson of the Jukebox License Office (JLO); and operator panels on gaming, leagues, healthy state associations, and state tournaments and promotions.

Additional activities included a management session for state association executives, a factory tour at the headquarters of Pyramid Technologies, a golf outing, a welcome reception, and a group dinner.

Also, Pyramid Technologies opened the doors of its headquarters to attendees for a factory tour.

The meeting was in the able hands of Emily Dunn of Tom's Amusement, State Association Committee Chair, assisted by Mary Lavine of Bullseye Games, Hal Williamson of Gardner's Up North, Larry Elbert of Camden Amusement, and Jerry Johnston of Amusement Unlimited.

AMOA President Donovan Fremin of Delta Music Inc. said, "This meeting has the best of every past meeting all rolled into one. Everyone has a positive outlook on the economy and the industry. We're accomplishing a great deal at this meeting. We have the largest number of new attendees we've seen in recent years. That's what we need: new blood."

Fremin added, "As I've traveled to state meetings across the country I have noticed an increase in attendance, which indicates that operators are getting more involved in state events. That involvement will help them learn and survive. This full room is a testament to that involvement. Hopefully, this trend will continue all year long, reflected in increased attendance at the upcoming Amusement Expo, state meetings this year, and other AMOA-sanctioned meetings."

Jeff George of Wyoming Amusement, who attended for the first time, said, "I've learned a lot about how different states run their pool and dart leagues. I can take these ideas back with me to share; it's been very educational." Jerry Johnston of Amusement Unlimited said, "There are a lot of things I don't have an answer for, but there is someone in this room who does. These meetings are terrific for networking and good for the industry."

Manufacturer panelist Sabrina Mokuahi of Incredible Technologies said, "It's invaluable coming here and finding out what's going on around the country and the issues facing operators.'" Manufacturer panelist Chris Felix of MEI said, "This is an incredible opportunity to be able to find out what works and what doesn't and to learn how to improve your business."

Hallmarks of this meeting are the camaraderie and free-flowing exchange of information laced with humor, which makes for a memorable event that is highly anticipated every year. AMOA-Notre Dame program going strong

The AMOA-Notre Dame Management Program started in 1972. This continuing education program has furthered the careers and contributed to the professionalism of hundreds of coin-op executives. Unlike broadly focused curriculums, the AMOA-Notre Dame courses are specifically designed for those engaged in the commercial amusements business sector. Students commit to attend five weekend sessions over two and one-half years and graduates receive a "Certified Business Executive" certificate upon completion of the program.

Beyond the learning and camaraderie among classmates is the college setting. The South Bend, Ind., campus offers the perfect backdrop for the AMOA education program. Patterned after Notre Dame's executive MBA program and taught by top Notre Dame faculty, the program focuses on business issues directly related to operators. Seminar topics have included business law, marketing, communications, finance and leadership management.

Overwhelmingly, the alumni who have attended this program heap high praise on this special association initiative. Now entering its fourth decade, the AMOA-Notre Dame Management Program has not only withstood the test of time, it has gotten better with age. And, this fall, another group of industry executives will be the beneficiaries of this evolution, when Class XVI gets started. The dates are Oct. 26-29. For more information or to register please contact Lori Schneider at (800)937-2662, or by email at (llschneider@prodigy.net).

VGT updates Cherry 96 for Illinois market

Video Gaming Technologies Inc. (VGT) has developed an updated version of the popular Cherry 96 game, and will be the sole distributor of the game as part of its VEGA$ Jackpot$™ product line for the Illinois video gaming machine market. The previous version of Cherry 96 had a combination of appealing game play and popular graphics.

"We were looking for a way to connect with Illinois players rather than just bringing in games that may have worked in other states," said Illinois Sales Manager Frank Fortunato. "So in addition to building a custom game set with input from Illinois players, we asked Illinois operators what we could do to create interest. Their answer time and time again was that they would like to see a game like Cherry 96."

Cherry 96 has been integrated into the VEGA$ Jackpot$™ game suite and will be compliant with all applicable laws and regulations under the Illinois Video Gaming Act. The addition of Cherry 96 marks VGT's latest step in creating a custom product specifically for the emerging Illinois market. VGT has already achieved several other custom solutions, including the design of a new gaming cabinet, the development of market-specific games and the inclusion of popular 8-liner games in its product suite. NAMA membership is available for new operator members and those operators that were not members of NAMA in 2011 and 2012. "We look forward to the success of the program and welcoming new NAMA members," said Dean Gilland, NAMA Vice President Sales and Service.

Foley's attorneys issued a press release, which said in part, "In a two-week negotiation with the government, a plea agreement was reached on the eve of trial. Foley admitted only that he and a co-defendant continued to use the name UltraCade in connection with selling game packs manufactured after the Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors (liquidation of UltraCade assets) when Foley was no longer operating the company, and that Foley closed escrow on his home days after a change in his employment status after informing only the mortgage broker of that change. In accepting responsibility for his actions, Foley pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud."

Michigan operator expands business

Vic Morrow, Owner and Operator of Coinoptoys LLC in Waterford, Mich., is expanding his business to include used arcade equipment sales throughout the U.S.

Morrow said, "I decided it was time to take it to the next level. There are many operators who have felt the stress of the economy over the past few years, and I thought it was time to start networking to help them. I believe if I continue to buy in bulk purchases I can pass some of the savings along to others."

He continued, "We all know the past few years have been tough; some states have passed smoking bans in public places and that alone has hurt. Then we've had very few new games coming out that have actually made any revenue for us."

Morrow invites operators of all types of venues to send a list of games they wish to sell or to see what Coinoptoys LLC has for sale. He said, "I will send a truck and personnel to help load the truck if possible. We are also open for trade-ins or consignment loads." All equipment is thoroughly checked out before shipping. For more information, call Morrow at (248)461-6652 or (248)892-4273; e-mail (coinoptoys@aol.com).

IT's PowerPutt LIVE coming soon

Incredible Technologies (IT) will display PowerPutt LIVE at the upcoming Amusement Expo and is scheduled to ship the game in March. The original PowerPutt debuted in the fall of 2008 and delivered a real mini-golf experience.

It was designed as a stand-alone, offline game with three courses. PowerPutt LIVE includes the three original courses plus three brand-new layouts for a total of six. Courses include: Big Foot Bend, Dusty Trail, Freaky Tiki, King Putt's Tomb, Roadside 66, and Skull Island.

"We've tweaked all the tee and pin positions on the original courses giving them a new look and feel, and the new courses are simply incredible," said Jim Zielinski, award-winning designer and co-creator of PowerPutt LIVE. "When you add in all of the online functionality that players, locations, and operators demand from on-premise games today, the end result is a unique, compelling entertainment experience that really gives operators their money's worth."

The new daily tournament format is designed to encourage repeat play. Players can compete as many times as they'd like since a bad game doesn't hurt their chances of winning, and there is a new tournament every day. The new daily tournament also features an escalating cash purse starting with a minimum of $200. The top 50 players will win and the first-place prize begins at $50. As more games go online, and tournament entries increase, the tournament prize purse will increase as well.

Don Pesceone, Senior Vice President of Sales, said, "The key is getting in early and taking advantage of being the first on the block with a hot, new game. But it doesn't begin and end with the tournament. PowerPutt LIVE also features FACTS LIVE and AdWiz LIVE. Operators can run their own local contests and promotions using FACTS LIVE, and with AdWiz LIVE they can download full-color ads and messages directly to their games. No more manual installation required."

The combination of annual PowerPutt LIVE and Golden Tee LIVE updates will make it easy for operators to forecast cash flows all year long. Operators can count on a PowerPutt LIVE new courses update every spring. Coupled with a Golden Tee update in the fall, operators can also take advantage of our no-money-down, zero percent interest, monthly payment plans. For more information, call the PowerPutt LIVE sales hotline (800)262-0323, ext. 106; Web (www.powerputtgolf.com).

Redemption Plus receives IAAPA Award

Redemption Plus received a Brass Ring Award (honorable mention) in the category of Best New Product/Services, Supplies, and Equipment at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Expo 2011 in Orlando. Redemption Plus, through its Pinnacle Entertainment Advisors division, added custom redemption counters to its line in 2011. They are capable of creating traditional counters starting as small as eight linear feet, without size limit on the upper end.

According to Redemption Plus, a major factor in the judge's decision was the "Pinnacle Hybrid" Redemption Room, a breakthrough in redemption store design. Prior to this innovation, typical rooms consisted of four walls, creating a visual barrier between players and the merchandise. Pinnacle's Hybrid opens up the fourth wall, preserving all of the shopping experience positives of a room, while keeping the visual connection between games and merchandise.

Ron Hill, President and CEO of Redemption Plus, said, "We know that creating an attractive merchandise display is essential to developing a high performing game room because it drives game play and generates revenue. We want to help redemption centers maximize the impact of their product." For more information, call (888)564-7587; Web (www.redemptionplus.com). Special Report: IAAPA 2011

The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Expo concluded in Orlando on Nov. 18. Attendance figures reached 25,800, which is a normal occurrence for a show of this magnitude.

The program book ran 248 pages with listings for exhibitors representing all types of attractions, from coin-op games to food and beverages, and from high-tech equipment to prize merchandise. An always-impressive education program included the popular Rookies and Newcomers program that drew 78 registrants, as well as nearly 80 seminars divided by specialized track such as the family entertainment center (FEC) track.

The American Amusement Machine Association (AAMA) again secured a section for its members, 15 companies occupying 50 booths, up from the allocation for 2010. The show is part of the AAMA Location Trade Show Program (LTS); the space sold out six months ago.

John Schultz, President of AAMA, said, "This is just a small portion of the total coin-op presence." Indeed, coin-op companies were seen throughout the exhibit floor, many clustered around the AAMA booths. AAMA featured a distributor area, titled "Pathway to Purchase," to help educate buyers on how to obtain their equipment.

Tina Schwartz of AAMA spoke about the advantage of the LTS program: "Our seniority allows us to have a great position on the exhibit floor, which is truly a benefit to our members. We also work with the shipping and transfer services on behalf of our members."

Dave Courington of Valley-Dynamo commented on the show: "Where else can you find a shuffleboard game and a pirate ship right next to each other? It's a great show, our biggest international show by far. The timing is ideal for people opening in the spring; they are here looking for things to add to their locations. Anything you can think of is at this show. If distributors can seek out those people, they can steer them to the types of coin-op equipment they need to buy. This is a great place to bring customers."

David Capilouto of Betson Orlando said, "I come to this show for education on new products. It's a good place to meet customers, exchange information, and talk about their needs and plans for the new spring and summer season ahead."

Matt Pascal of the Entertainment Experts group, said, "We come here to network with other people in the industry. We found one new product provider. We think we know what's going on, but we come to make sure we do. And it might stimulate an idea from a comparable industry that will work for us."

Cynthia Lai of Injoy Motion commented, "It appears to be a smaller crowd that last year, but we still are seeing good buyers. It's an important show for us because so many different people with different venues attend and will learn about our product line."

Greg Bacorn of Barron Games International agreed with Lai: "While it hasn't been as busy as last year, with less foot traffic, attendees are mostly qualified buyers. The reception to our products has been outstanding."

The expo was also the occasion for the association to announce new leadership and present awards. Roland Mack of Europa-Park in Germany is the new Chairman; he succeeds Bob Rippy of Jungle Rapids in the U.S. Four new members were inducted into the IAAPA Hall of Fame: John P.C. Collins of John Collins Leisure in the U.K., an industry leader; Frederick W. Pearce Sr., of F.W. Pearce Co USA, an industry pioneer; and Wally Boag and Betty Taylor of Disneyland USA, legendary entertainers. Bob's Space Racers won an award for Best Exhibit 1,100+ square feet.

Also part of the expo were behind-the-scenes facility tours of Walt Disney World and Legoland Florida; a number of receptions; charity events that raised $64,000 for Give Kids The World (GKTW), and more. Dates are set for the IAAPA Expo 2012: Nov. 12-16.

Lou Lang (D-Skokie) incorporated many changes Quinn requested, including granting the Illinois Gaming Board tighter control over five proposed casinos in Chicago, the south suburbs, Danville, Lake County and Rockford. But the legislation kept a provision allowing slot machines to be installed at the state’s five race tracks, which was a deal-breaker for Quinn and for a few lawmakers who changed their minds since the original measure passed in May. The revised bill failed by a vote of 58-53. A roll call vote was not immediately available. The original gambling expansion measure passed in May with 65 votes. Lang swiftly moved the failed bill to “postponed consideration,” a parliamentary move that would allow him to bring it back for a vote. But Wednesday’s vote may table the controversial legislation for the time being.

Illinois Gov. Quinn to replace members of the IGB
According to a report in the Chicago Tribune, "Gov. Pat Quinn is replacing everyone on the Illinois Gaming Board except the chairman, an advocate for strong regulation of gambling. Quinn said Monday that under Chairman Aaron Jaffe, the board 'has increased openness and transparency' in the gambling industry." No explanation was given for this change. There will be four new appointments to the five-member board. It is not clear if this will affect in any way the implementation of the Video Gaming Act of 2009, which is moving forward in the licensing process.

In other Illinois news related to the Video Gaming Act of 2009, according to the Illinois Municipal League, Gov. Quinn "would like to see a change in the Act to grant municipalities and counties with authority to 'opt-in' if they desire to have video gaming in their communities. This is diametrically opposed to the current 'opt-out' provision in the statute. Gov Quinn states his desire for 'video gaming only in those communities that expressly approve the video gaming on their premises.'"

The Weiner Distributing Print Shop produces replacement decals for game cabinets, as well as signage for arcade and family entertainment center (FEC) usage. Weiner adds that the focus of his business has always been to keep amusement equipment working and earning for the operator in the most practical and economical way possible.

The company is offering a free sample sheet of decals to every customer as an introduction to print shop's services. To request a sample, customers can call (800)-4-WEINER, or visit (www.weiner.com/print_shop).

Illinois still considers casinos

NAMA responds to Dodd-Frank legislation
The National Automatic Merchandising Association (NAMA) has responded to the Dodd-Frank Financial Reform legislation, calling on its members to contact members of Congress and educate them about the harmful impact the legislation will have on the vending industry. The legislation was enacted to bring fundamental changes to the U.S. financial system after the last financial crisis affecting the banking industry, and includes an added Durbin Amendment that requires a limit on "swipe fees" that VISA, MasterCard, and others can charge for debit card transactions. The legislation went into effect on Oct. 1.

Dan Mathews, NCE5, CSS, Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of NAMA, said, "Major changes will cut average debit card swipe fees by approximately 45 percent. Although this will be beneficial for large ticket transactions, there is an adverse impact on the vending industry due to our typical small ticket transactions. This new cap would as much as triple the net swipe fee for small transactions. For more information, visit (www.vending.org). A new link on the Web site is being developed to provide more details. Mathews added, "Our members can be sure that we'll be taking every step possible to protect them from this heavy new burden imposed on them by this legislation."
